Blunt talking by Michael Corleone

In chalking out the strategy board, business strategist often have a peep at the pages of past masters in the game. Even though he is a fictitious character in Godfather Trilogy, Michael Corleone has left large footprints, many of these have entered into the hall of fame in business strategy lore. May I be permitted to cherry pick few of these for your reading pleasure!

Pressing the fear button Michael Corleone warns. “You know the saddest thing about betrayal? It never comes from an enemy”. Presumably, it is the near and dear one who has the cruel heart of perpetrating a gory betrayal that could cost you immense loss in terms of life and possession. Evidencing this axiom Michael chimes more: “The fact is that betrayal will rarely come from enemies but from the closest”.

Navigating above brings up a new revelation. The impending doom might have been known to some quarters who wish to remain silent for a couple of reasons: One the prospective informant perhaps feel that he is putting his life on line by spilling the beans. Secondly the intended receiver might turn against the informer and nail him down. Michael’s personage does not have either of these:  “I respect those that tell me the truth, no matter how hard it is”.

The big question is understanding where the hidden enemy is and how he would operate. Or on the contrary where your true ally is and how he could help you. Simply stated, such understanding is preceded upon by your judgement of character, emotion and inner workings of a supposed enemy or friend. Before going into nitty gritty, business strategy commands as in the words of Michael Corleone, “Prioritise skill and competence over friendly feelings”.

Having said that, Michael Corleone rests his case with this oft quoted maxim in business strategy that every business man must follow: “The ability to judge who is best able to further your interest in all situations”.
