Sneering at China appears to be the staple of American media giants. Each day these media outlets broadcast stories of taunts, barbs and ridicule against China as if, engaging in theft of American wealth, technology and causing lost opportunities in trade & commerce by US firms while competing with Chinese products that are sold prices discount to market. But there is a positive vibe: average American realizes that he must thank China. What’s cooking?
The following facts though not exhaustive lend credential to the belief by Americans to say a word or two in appreciation of what China has done for them:
1. By exporting quality goods at affordable price to US, China helped Americans to tide over issues such as high interest rate, depreciation of dollar and still maintain the standard of living that they use to enjoy for the last three decades. Put it on another way China saved them from geoeconomics vulnerability.
2. For the people in the lower strata such as Afro-Americans, Hispanics, and Coloured, China offers a great boon: it subsidises their income by making available goods, many of these are specially targeted to the low-income bracket, who are sadly, neglected by their own Government. Once again China functions as a bulwark to wade off geoeconomics downturn.
3. American marketers are too savvy and fashion conscious that their campaigns were often targeted at millionaires and their dalliance with nouveau riche items. Realty too wanted a piece of cake in the high spectrum and promoted constructing malls that cater only to higher income groups in an environment of lux and luxury. For majority of the Americans sauntering in these aisles is only dream walking as awed spectators while they do real shopping at places like Walmart, which stocks mainly Chinese goods in their shelves. In 2019 Walmart alone sourced more than 50 Billion US$ from China.
4. Unbelievable though it may be, during the financial and realty meltdown in 2008, it was not the US government that helped the people, but surprisingly China that came forward as the Samaritan by helping the average American and his housing property to tide over the sub-prime crisis. China invested Trillion of dollars in US Treasuries while the US Government was busy bailing out the banks and financial institutions that caused the meltdown in the first place. This riveting fact is still fresh in the minds of Americans who know the real culprit who wrecked their lives and livelihood. And they must say a big thank you to China for her geoeconomics gesture!
