Revenge is a dish best served cold

Suppression of the Boxer rebellion is an indelible scar in the heart and mind of Chinese people. The atrocities committed in China by the Eight Nation Alliance still torments not only China as country but Chinese as a nation so much so vengeance runs through their marrow bones. After 120 years China has come back to haunt the perpetrators of the dastardly crime with the fitting reply of “revenge is a dish best served as cold.”

Yihituan Movement, also popularly known as Boxer Rebellion started as an Anti-Imperial Uprising in China against foreigners in 1890. This resulted in death of several foreigners. As a counter measure eight powers formed an alliance for invading China in 1900. The partners of the Alliance were: British Empire, Austro-Hungarian Empire, Unites States, Germany, Russia, Italy, France and Japan.

The objective of the campaign include not only suppressing boxer rebellion, but to safeguard privileges of the foreigners, their hold on the economy, protect churches and specifically to protect the Legation Quarters where they had their residence. At the end the invaders started plundering and pillaging not only Beijing but every major cities spread across China, stealing   cultural artefacts, burning books and libraries. Finally, most rebels, aristocrats and governments officials were either executed without trial or expelled to Xinxiang.

Afterwards Boxer Protocol was signed between the Alliance and the Emperor with humiliating conditions that include inter-alia:

1) Prohibition of imports of arms & ammunition

2) No Chinese were allowed to live in the Legation Quarters

3) Stationing of Alliance soldiers in garrisons in major cities

4) Forbidding the Emperor to have any defence agreement with other countries

The obnoxious humiliation was the imposition of a fine to be paid to Alliance partners. Originally the amount was 18,000 tonnes of silver which was amortized at the end of 39 years in 1940 where interest and capital amounted to 37,000 tonnes of silver which is at current value more than 30 Billion US Dollars.

China in 2020, is global empire whose business strategy has made many of the Alliance partners owing her massive export surplus totalling trillion of dollars.  What is more China holds about 1.25 Trillion of U S Dollar treasuries. A perfect example of “Revenge is a dish best served cold”!

Cheers!
