Ukraine, what is Russian Strategy?

The way Russian special operations in Ukraine going on befuddles analysts around the globe. The big question banging on their heads is what type of strategy Russia intends to follow. Left clueless, commentators across Atlantic come out with hasty opinions that Russia is running like a headless chicken and is doomed. Does this sound right?

In any venture be it business or war, there must be a defined concept preceding the actual crafting of strategy. A clear and concise strategy once drawn, begets planning of the operations in order to achieve the target and goals set in a specific theatre or wide area under focus. None of these aspects is clear to observers so far. 

The exact doctrine of war and how strategy dovetail such doctrine in executing approved war plans is too hazy that none of the experts in strategy and warfare could fathom the intentions of the Russian military stalwarts. More than the puzzle besetting Ukraine and her supporters the faulty reading into this development results in giving out their own ideas and expecting the results to go along with theorems they propagate. This has made the confusion more confounded.

The West expected a blitzkrieg where Russian forces attack and destroy Ukraine within few days and celebrate victory. But what these analysts are getting is a scenario where operations are rattled up few days and thereafter   big pause announcing readiness for negotiations pitching on some sort of ceasefire. Then Russians go back to square one with heave bombardments across the battle field. There is neither head nor tail seen and reacted to.

Sun Tzu comes in. “What is of supreme importance in war is to attack the enemy’s strategy”.  How do you do this when you do not know the precise strategy Russia is executing?  Sun Tzu says further, “The whole secret lies in confusing the enemy, so that he cannot fathom your real intention” implying that keeping your strategy closer to your heart pays

My take is simple: Russia is adopting centuries old doctrine of deep warfare known as “Glubokaya Operatsiya”.  So far there is no counter to this doctrine in Western world. Once they accomplish the successful completion of this in Ukraine battle field there is nothing to stop Russia extending deep warfare into the field of economics as business strategy. Get ready for the new “multi- dimensional superpower!
