Imran Khan, the cricketer knows the game very well and now politics in Pakistan too. After assuming office as the premier in August 2018, he has picked up the brass tacks of fractured and treacherous minefield of Pak politics and the nuances of international diplomacy. Dissolving parliament has bowled out USA, Pak Army and the politicians in one googly.
Biden initiated “Imran must go” project when Pakistan did not go along with USA over sanctions against Russia. “Are we your slaves”, thundered the great khan after heads of 22 diplomatic missions released a joint letter urging Pakistan to support a resolution at the UN condemning Russia's invasion of Ukraine. But the one that got him against the cross hairs of U S policy is the bargain he clicked in Moscow just before hours of the commencement of Russia’s special operations in Ukraine.
Russia agreed to allocate 2 million tonnes of wheat to Pakistan on concessionary terms. More than that supply of natural gas to Pak was agreed in principle. Already there is a project underway to build up 1,100 km pipeline that transports liquefied gas from port city of Karachi to Kasur in Punjab that too, to be built up by Russia.
For USA tolerance limit is set in an equation where Pak-China as well as Pak-US must be appropriately fine-tuned so that skewing towards one side is avoided throughout. The new entrant is Russia and the third equation of Pak-Russia upsets the apple card badly. Ramifications could extend the situation where Russia would be poised to play honest peace maker between China- India and now Pak- India a move that brings out tectonic shifts in the Himalayas where all there countries have soldiers staring at one another.
So the drama began with Donald Lu State Department official suggesting to Pakistan Ambassador in Washington that relations between both countries would not improve if Imran Khan is calling the shots. Moreover, USA also sent grapevine messages to Pak Army and political leaders that ousting Imran is the right option. Accordingly, the politicians submitted no-confidence motion, perhaps with the nod by Pak Army.
Imran prevailed upon the Deputy Speaker of Pak Parliament to reject the motion. Once that strategy was carried through Imran requested the Parliament to be dissolved and fresh elections to be held within the next 90 days. Imran continues as the care taker premier, meanwhile. Leave apart how the tidings work in the hustings, Imran bowled the last ball and the outcome is both U S and Pak politics not to mention Pak army were bowled out in single googly!
Cheers!
