Ramzan Kadyrov is not an ordinary guy. A militant who once fought against Putin defending Chechnya, later transforming as trusted and obedient supporter of the Russian cause. Putin made a strategic move in getting him to enter Mariupol theatre to liberate the city. Kadyrov did not disappoint Putin.
Tough and battle hardened, Ramzan Kadyrov, known popularly as Kadyrov, is 45 and recently promoted as Lieutenant General in Russian Forces. In addition to commanding regular army unit Kadyrov has his own paramilitary setup whose number remains secret but not their unique stew of bravery, brutality and professionalism in action. Major strengths of Chechen soldiers highlighted below are well known and well documented:
1. Expertise in war of attrition
2. Highly skilled in urban warfare involving street-to street fighting
3. Proven talent in clean-up operations involving house-to house search, marking and shooting hidden enemies with high skills of marksmanship
4. Ability to merge with civilians and spotting the Nazis in the crowd
5. Supplementing Russian regular intelligence services by collecting info and identifying Ukrainian sleeping or active assets in espionage and intelligence gathering
6. Excellent skills in charm offensive and building trust with ethnicities across the spectrum.
Putin had several goals in Mariupol in the Donetsk oblast. As a port city with multi-ethnic canvass hovering above, Mariupol is a textbook example where treading carefully is all the most important ingredient for good soldiery. Plenty of Ukrainians who speak Russian or Ukraine languages along with Greeks, Turks, Jews and few tartars besot the city which is famous for industry and in fact is much larger than Donetsk city, capital of the oblast.
De-Nazification of the Azov battalion and its sympathisers is gargantuan task. In addition to limit civilian casualties Putin has got the hot potato of humanitarian issues. De-Militarization requires clean-up of the city of all those soldiers in the Armed forces of Ukraine (AFU) and associated members of the National Guard.
Putin the strategist then decided to co-opt Chechens into the Mariupol theatre under the command of Kadyrov, a strategy he expected to turn the table on the Ukrainian leadership. He informed this to the commanding officer of Russian forces in Mariupol Lieutenant General Andrei Mordvichev. Both Lieutenant Generals met up in Mariupol. Within few days the result shows Putin has mastered strategy in his own right. Mariupol fell and is in the safe hands of Russian forces. By this, Donetsk oblast is free of all the remnants of Ukrainian authority!
