Why business strategist must be an out of box thinker?

No business strategist worth his salt can churn out strategies on standardized platform. Even a computer program can do that function, perhaps much more efficiently than possible. Therefore, out of box thinking is the trait that can make a business strategist an exceptional one. Few pointers:

In an ever changing marking condition business strategy cannot be static and conform only to known notions and ideas. There has to be a great degree of divergence from the realm of of known to the realm of uncertainty. As a concomitant to uncertainty there is a measurable degree of risk. One thing is risk of failure and another daunting challenge is the loss of reputation of business strategist himself and the firm he represents.

Inside the box, the element of risk is fairly reduced in the normal course of business. Yet changing circumstances might impact on the level of profit taking and turnover if no adaptations are contemplated by the firm. Competitors might barge in with new products or new ideas of using the existing product. It is indeed essential to break out from existing thinking and remove ideas that have been associated with the existing thinking. A good example is marketing of pre-cooked corn that can be used instantly in several menus.

When a business strategist finds himself out of box, he can easily disintegrate nodes of ideas and bring it together in a new configuration. For example paperless office is a novel idea that assembles the existing ideas of past records and authentication, made available for future reference in computerized memory. In doing so the relevance of the records for present and future use is never jettisoned.

Most often than not, out of box thinking brings out stream of ideas, many of them are just sparks of imagination. The ideas that merit further examination must pass muster with the concept of being practical. There is no point wasting time and money over ideas that cannot be implemented with the present state of technology or a near future one that is just on the pipeline. Moon tourism is such a brilliant idea which has not taken off the ground due to technology limitation.

Out of box thinking is a long term affair. It not only tests the patience of business strategist but also the willingness of the firm to go ahead. Long sitting is an expensive affair that is not for the types who want quick bucks. But who sit it out long finds a great boon when new product is launched or new market is identified. Let me say that Apple iPhone is one such product and Samsung is one such company that found cheaper smart phone selling in new markets globally.

Cheers!
